Arthritis in New Mexico

Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the nation. More than 372,000 adults in New Mexico have doctor-diagnosed arthritis (26%).

COST

In 2003, an estimated $770.0 million was spent in New Mexico on arthritis. Of this, direct costs (i.e., medical expenditures) accounted for $485.6 million while indirect costs (i.e., lost productivity) accounted for $284.4 million.

SEX

Among adult women in New Mexico, more than 213,000 (29%) have doctor-diagnosed arthritis compared to 159,000 (23%) adult males. A significantly higher percentage of females have arthritis.

There is a significant increase in the percentage of adults with arthritis with increasing age categories. In 2009, 69,000 (10%) adults 18 – 44 years old, 169,000 (35%) adults 45 – 64 years old, 69,000 (51%) adults 65 – 74 years old and 63,000 (54%) adults 75 + years old reported having arthritis.
